As long as I can remember, I have been anxiously awaiting something and never with any amount of patience that is required. I have tried to remind myself of the cliché that life is more about the journey than the destination, but I still longed for the destination more than looking out at where I am now. Growing older, I have seen that this rush through life, this impatiently waiting has allowed room for worry and fear to take root in my mind. I see this more in contrast to my ever flexible, patient and happy husband. Seeing the qualities I would rather have in him has caused me to evaluate and take to the Word of God to find change and healing.

Living in West Africa exposes one to beggars such as we rarely see in our modern developed world. So many folks who were seeing them for the first time asked us, “So what do you do? Do you give to all of them? Do you try to help them? How do you know who to help with so many crying out?”

Jesus cursed the fig tree. No fruit, you die. Ooh, tough judgment. But the truth is that it is as much a simple reality as a judgment. When the church is not fruitful, it will die.

We are all about doing as long as we can choose what we will do. As soon as God asks us to do something that will demonstrate true love for him and our neighbor the cost becomes too great and we walk on the other side of the road.

My in-laws were visiting us in Europe. They honestly had no desire to travel and sightsee. They just wanted to be with the grandchildren and have an idea of what our lives are like here. So we took them to eat Turkish pizza.

We took our young son to Versailles. As we were leaving, we remarked that most of men selling souvenirs were probably Senegalese. That excited Brandon because he realized that the men most likely spoke Wolof. He asked us to give him courage because he wanted to walk up to the men and say the Wolof greetings he had learned years before while living in West Africa.

My children recently explained to me that for them and their immigrant friends, constantly moving back and forth between countries and continents is in fact a ‘normal’ way of life. Indeed, world mobilization and communication have changed the strategy of missions. Rather than fear the changes as intrusions upon our own comfort zone, let's embrace them. Let's realize that God is about his purpose of spreading his love to all people.

I remember the first time I clearly realized that the face of America was truly changing. I was returning to the States for a meeting and a short leave. The plane was making its descent to the airport. I saw 3 red brick churches with white steeples just outside the airport grounds. It was a bit of a shock after Europe where the Protestant church is so small. While having something to eat in the airport, I watched the people passing by. I saw several Oriental families, which was not surprising. I had become accustomed to seeing families from the East in the states. But then I saw families in full Muslim dress. “Oh my,” I thought, “do the churches just outside know what is here on the inside? And if they do, are they able and prepared to deal with it?”
