DESCRIPTION OF PLACE OF ASSIGNMENT:
San Francisco State University has 23,000 undergraduates. According to San Francisco web site, it is the home to about 2,200 international undergrad students on it’s main campus. This does not include graduates, families and visiting scholars. These students represent close to 100 different countries. In addition, there are a large number of graduate international students and visiting scholars, along with their families. ISI (International Student Inc.) works with internationals students. They have a few activities and a Bible Study. http://www.isiwebnet.net/sites/CThomas/Home They also have a international student welcome dinner that is associated with International Student Affairs office at the University. By their website, it appears that they reach about 15-30 students in activities, and about 60 attend the welcome dinner. They have a Thanksgiving dinner as well.
It is our goal not to duplicate ISI and what they are doing, but to find a niche, and reach students that are not attending the Bible Study or activities. The primary way in doing this is to offer classes or activities that would interest International students, to reach them by meeting them one on one and building relationships, to reach out to families, and perhaps to reach out wives of visiting scholars. There are many ways that can looked at in reaching international students at San Francisco State. We will work together with our team with providing ideas and options as you begin your work there.
In all of San Francisco, ISI (International Students Inc.), has estimated that San Francisco is host to 8,094 international students and scholars. The United States boasts of 342 world leaders who attended our universities. http://exchanges.state.gov/education/educationusa/leaders.htm. By working with students, we can change the world!
San Francisco is a very beautiful, diverse, intriguing, international city from the Golden Gate Bridge to the Bay Bridge. It is a new home for many internationals. Immigrants, international students, and refugees from all over the world come to the San Francisco/Bay Area. There is great opportunity to reach the nations with the Gospel because the nations are crossing the oceans to come here.
San Francisco, has a population of about 775,000 residents. San Francisco has 36.8% of those people who are foreign born. This comes to about 285,200 Internationals. Many of whom are coming from China, Vietnam, Iran, India, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, Uzbekistan, and Pakistan and about 150 more countries. In addition, the Bay Area has the largest Chinese and Afghan populations in the US. San Francisco is in particular, a world of it’s own, with various lifestyles and religions. Only about 10 out of 100 attend church… any church of any religion, including those made up by residents in the area.

ANY SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS OR SUGGESTIONS:
Transportation: San Francisco has plenty of public transportation. Because of parking costs and lack of parking, it is encouraged that public transportation be used.
Housing: would need to be in an apartment near SFSU.
This person should attend 19th Ave Baptist Church, a CBF church, who has been involved with CBF personnel in the past in ministry to internationals. It would be good to become involved in the church’s missional movement. This would provide one with immediate local support and a church family that is involved with CBF as well as ministry to internationals. The unit could possibly maintain an office at the church which is very close to the university and would further involve participation from the church in the internationals ministry.
Coaches, Rick and Lita Sample, work as Strategic Catalyst in the East Bay (across the Bay from San Francisco). They work with immigrants, refugees, and international students. They work to partner with churches, organizations, and individuals to reach out to internationals. The work that has been done with students has been at San Jose State University, located in the South Bay Area. They would be working with you to reach students at San Francisco State.
“The World at Your Door” by Tom Phillips, Robert W. Norsworthy, W. Terry Whalin, Terry Whalin is a great resource book that should be read in preparation for this position.
