International students, and Indians in particular, have many needs when coming to the United States for graduate school. Culture shock, lack of funds, separation from spouses, and a feeling of inferiority are all common experiences to international students. Hospitality is essential in befriending students. Creating culturally relevant activities such as Chai time, Hindi movie night, traveling to cricket matches, etc. has provides an environment where students can go to "know and be known." Hosting students in our home for meals and for parties has provides a setting where students can open up about their experiences and feel part of a larger group of those who are experiencing similar life changes.
