As far as the eye can see, greenhouses. Thousands and thousands of plastic covered greenhouses hidden from our sights late last night as we drove to Almeria, Spain. But today – greenhouses everywhere! As we were driving late last night, we thought the shinny plastic on top of the greenhouses was water, the Mediterranean Sea. But no, they are the sweat shops of southern Spain, where thousands of immigrants legal and illegal work. (The immigrants who work in these greenhouses are the lucky ones, as we shall see on the rest of our trip. Many refugees and immigrants are stuck in North Arica desperate to get to Europe.) Just as the greenhouses were hidden from our sight because of darkness, immigrants in the USA are often hidden from our sight. We walk past them – ignore them. Read Romans 5:1-5.

New Year’s Day: new goals, new ideas, new hopes, and new weight los plans. These desires to start anew in 2008 are held by many of us, a way to refresh…but not for the refugees and migrants we met today. They returned today hoping for the good news they desire: work, a way to get to the West, or even a way to get home after giving up on a new life in their host country.



 

Instead of happiness and celebration for the New Year, they experience the same oppressive daily life in North Africa. Ringing in the New Year is more like the ringing of handcuffs in prison, as one was caught this night attempting to escape to Europe.

 

However, all is not lost. Those meeting the immigrants at the church do provide hope through food, medicine, and clothes. The smiling faces and words of personal encouragement are the most important. A prayer...

SCRIPTURE

Ezra 4:24 - Then work on the house of God in Jerusalem ceased and it was stopped until the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia.

OBSERVATION

Zerubbabel was a geat leader he must have become discouraged that his work was halted for sixteen years.

APPLICATION

All ministry has setbacks we all face "walls". God will send encouragement like he sent Haggai and Zechariah to help encourage Zerrubbabel. Who in your life are your Haggai and Zechariah's?

PRAYER

Father help me to realize You have control in my success and failure. To allow You to have complete ownership of all my endeavors. Give me ears to hear what the spirit is saying and a heart willing to sacrafice my will for Yours. Amen.

SCRIPTURE

Ezra 1:5 - Then the heads of father's households of Judah and Benjamin and the priests and the Levites arose even everyone whose spirit God had stirred to go up and rebuild the house of the Lord which is in Jerusalem.

OBSERVATION

God moved on Cyrus king of Persia to allow the Jews to go and rebuild the temple in Jerusalem. Cyrus gave back to the Jews the articles that where taken from the temple by Nebuchadnezzar.

APPLICATION

God uses whoever He wishes when I feel outnumbered, small, insignificant remember God can change and guide all hearts to do His wishes.

PRAYER

Father stir up the hearts of believers in Crossroads that they will have a heart for missions that they will step out and make a difference. Guide us as one body for Your purpose. Reveal to us Your plan in Jesus name. Amen.

Daniel 12:3 - Those who have insight will shine brightly like the brightness of the expanse of heaven those who lead the many to righteousness like the stars forever and ever.

OBSERVATION

There are many paths to stardom the world tantalizes us with riches and power.

APPLICATION

I should make kingdom work my first priority always seeking ways to shine for Christ. The world may never know my name. My Father knows my name and He promises me eternity.

PRAYER

Father help me to gain your insight to have a passion always to share the gospel. Pull me out of the glitter of life and help me shine inwardly for You. Amen.
